These paintings are of some of my closest family members and friends. In the paintings of rooms with people in them, I wanted to represent the situations in which I was having critical conversations, whether or not we thought of them that way. In my paintings of words, two of which are shown here, I represented the words that my parents’ culture repeated to me, in the way I perceived their intention.
I sent this first picture of a text painting (and I will be in the house of the Lord forever, 2019, oil paint on canvas, approx. 20” x 36”) that Mom hadn’t seen and three watercolors she had seen in my studio to her. Chewy is our black lab.
